Remember dolly the sheep. The superstar of cloning brought into our world of genetic artistry on 5th July 1996, was the worlds first sheep and maybe more significantly the worlds first mammal to be cloned. Well things have come along way since replicating an army of identical sheep.

Scientists in Kasmirs, Sher-i-Kashmir University have cloned a………………. goat, called “NOORI”. In fact this is not any old goat but a rare Cashmere goat indigenous to the Himalayan regain of Kashmir. How many goats does it take to make a Cashmere blanket?

Well the short answer is the average resulting material per goat per year is roughly 150 grams. In terms of cashmere blankets we find that one goat will provide enough wool for approximately 0.2 cashmere blankets per year. (assuming the average cashmere blanket weighs roughly 600g)
In fact a study of KwaZulu-Natal’s goat population – which ranks the 3rd largest in the East African cape – suggests and average yield of 0.1 cashmere blanket per goat. Or simply it takes 10 goats to produce 1 cashmere blanket.
this goes some way to explaining the luxurious price generally associated with cashmere blankets. Continue reading
